In a move to ensure public safety and support festive celebrations, CapMetro is offering free transit services on New Year's Eve. This measure is designed to give Austin residents a reliable and cost-free option for travel during the celebrations, lowering the risk of driving under the influence and other transportation-related issues that might arise during one of the busiest nights of the year.

According to an announcement made by CBS Austin, starting at 5 p.m. on December 31, all bus, rail, and on-demand pickup services will not require payment. Additionally, extended rail service hours are planned, with the last train set to leave Downtown Station at the unique time of 2:22 a.m. on January 1. Despite the celebratory disruptions,, regular bus services will run throughout the night, including the Night Owl routes from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

To accommodate the city's fireworks events at Auditorium Shores, CapMetro will also be rerouting several bus lines after 10:30 p.m. to avoid the festivities area. This shift, while a minor inconvenience, is an initiative to maintain the flow of transport amidst the thronging communal celebration of the New Year.

It's not all about New Year's Eve, though. As per details from an article provided by MSN, CapMetro has also announced that on New Year's Day it will shift to a Sunday schedule. This means there will be no rail, no Night Owl bus services, express or Pickup services available, giving the city time to recoup and transit workers a moment's pause after the heightened activity of the night prior.
