Earlier today, a charter bus crash in East Boston led to the closure of Route 1A and significant traffic congestion. The accident, which occurred around 5:39 a.m. near 175 McClellan Highway, forced the closure of both directions of the route, heavily impacting the southbound side toward Logan Airport. According to NBC Boston, Jacquelyn Goddard from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation warned travelers to expect delays and posted detour routes, with southbound traffic being diverted at Boardman Street and northbound at Addison Street.
Footage from the scene, revealed by Boston 25 News, showed the Academy bus with significant damage to its windshield stopped on the highway. Traffic, now backed up for miles, had Massachusetts State Police directing vehicles off the highway. The crash caused a downing of multiple power lines across the highway, just past Suffolk Downs, accentuating the need for drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
There have been no immediate reports of injuries involved with the crash, while the investigation is still in progress. "McClellan Highway in East Boston has been shut down in both directions. Traffic is being diverted into the neighborhoods of East Boston. Traffic in East Boston, Revere, and Chelsea will be impacted. Please seek an alternate route," Boston police stated in a post captured by Boston 25 News. Motorists are advised to allow extra time if traveling to Logan on Monday morning.
As a result of the incident, Eversource was notified due to the involvement of three additional light poles and two transformers that the bus brought down. In the ongoing efforts to manage the situation, it is unclear how long the road will remain closed. For those affected by the delays, real-time traffic updates and further information are being provided by local media outlets and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
