Tragedy struck the Hegewisch neighborhood on the southeast side of Chicago when three people, including a young child, were the victims of a shooting inside a residence. According to a report by the Chicago Sun-Times, the incident occurred on Sunday at approximately 5:25 p.m.
A 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman found themselves inadvertently in harm’s way, while simply being within the walls of a home on the 14400 block of South Carondolet Avenue. Gunfire erupted outside, piercing the home and striking both adults. The man was hit on the right side and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in a serious condition. The woman was shot in the shoulder yet managed to be in good condition, as per the police statement obtained by the Sun-Times.
The senselessness of the violence was further underscored by the shooting of a 4-year-old girl, who was also in the home during the incident. Struck in her right leg, she was taken to the Comer Children’s Hospital and was listed in good condition, a stark reminder of the indiscriminate nature of such attacks.
An additional report by CBS News Chicago emphasizes the area's geography, describing the house's location on a truncated block, bordered by diagonal Brainard Avenue and parallel freight rail tracks. Following the incident, officers were seen to quickly survey the alley behind the residence, attesting to the immediacy of the law enforcement response. Despite this, there were no descriptions of a suspect, and no arrests have been made as of late Sunday.
