The wave of car thefts hitting professional athletes has reached the Cleveland Browns, as quarterback Jameis Winston's 2023 Cadillac Escalade has been declared stolen. The vehicle in question was reported missing from a residential area in Hunting Valley, an affluent suburb known for its privacy and security. According to information obtained by News 5 Cleveland, the SUV vanished around 10 a.m. last Tuesday, but the theft was not reported until several days later.
Amid suspicions of a fraudulent receiver at the heart of the theft, local authorities have been grappling with details of the incident. The Hunting Valley police provided details of the case. Winston's Escalade was supposed to be transported by Interstate Auto, a Northeast Ohio towing company, for delivery to California. However, the vehicle was dropped off in Detroit under fraudulent circumstances, per the WKYC account. This is not the first such incident involving Browns quarterbacks. Deshaun Watson's truck was one of five cars stolen from a North Olmstead car dealership in 2023.
As of the latest update, the authorities have entered Winston's SUV into the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as stolen vehicles. The Hunting Valley police are spearheading the search, with assistance from other agencies, aiming to recover the high-value SUV.
The investigation is complicated by cross-state elements, prompting local enforcement to call upon the public for any information that could lead to the recovery of the vehicle. "The transporter delivered the vehicle to a receiver in Detroit, but authorities now believe the receiver was fraudulent," according to a statement obtained by WKYC. Community members with relevant information are urged to contact the Hunting Valley police, highlighting the collaborative effort necessary in such cases.
