As Cleveland braces for a cold snap, residents in northeastern Ohio are already experiencing snow, and the National Weather Service in Cleveland is reporting a series of weather events impacting the area. A weak low-pressure system moved through early this morning, followed by an upper-level trough set to stir things up this afternoon. For those hoping for a break, high pressure will try to offer some relief late Saturday into Sunday, but come Monday, a strong low-pressure system is expected to bring a fresh round of snow to parts of the area, according to the NWS Cleveland's Area Forecast Discussion.
Regarding the near-term weather, The NWS update indicated that snow is exiting western zones but remains present as an upper trough moves in, with additional lake effect snow anticipated later on, "Parcel vertical motion should be easily obtained with minimal forcing overall as 1000-700mb lapse rates run in the 7-8C range for the daytime hours today," the NWS Cleveland's forecast stated. Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing today, dipping into the teens tonight and warming slightly to the low to mid-20s on Saturday.
As for the outlook through the weekend, lake-effect snow is anticipated to decrease by Sunday morning as a ridge brings drier air over the region. However, eastern Erie County PA could see 2-4 inches of snow. A surface low pressure from the west is set to introduce a new weather event, bringing 3-6 inches of snow south of US-30 with potential for greater accumulations in the southernmost regions, "Future shifts will continue to monitor trends with winter weather headlines possibly needed Sunday night through Monday," NWS Cleveland has signaled.
Looking into next week, the departure of this surface low ushers in northwesterly flow and more lake-effect snow. It's shaping up to be a frigid week with highs in the upper teens to lower 20s and overnight lows in the teens and possibly single digits by week's end, "It will remain cold through next week with highs in the upper teens to lower 20s each day and overnight lows in the teens with single digits possible near the end of the long term," the NWS advises. For the maritime community, conditions on Lake Erie are rough, with the Weather Service issuing Small Craft Advisories as waves are expected to reach 5-8 feet.
Those living in the affected regions are encouraged to stay tuned to the latest NWS updates and prepare for challenging travel conditions. With winter firmly taking hold across the Lake Erie area, it's clear that both snow enthusiasts and those weary of winter weather will have much to contend with in the coming days.
