In a strategic shift, Cognite, a Norwegian industrial software developer, has chosen to relocate its global headquarters from Oslo to the city of Tempe, Arizona, a move that's slated to bring upwards of 100 new jobs to the region. According to ABC15, the company has signed a lease for nearly 30,000 square feet of office space on the ninth floor of Hayden Ferry Lakeside III, located at 40 E. Rio Salado Parkway, with plans to occupy the new digs as early as May.
Cognite's CEO Girish Rishi, who spoke to the Business Journal, expounded on the new headquarters, revealing it will house a variety of departments including management, finance, human resources, information technology, and strategic services consulting, meanwhile, emphasizing that a major focal point will be establishing engineering, products, services, innovation, and R&D teams in Tempe, which will be a significant effort for them.
Recognized as a rapidly expanding entity in the industrial software sector since its inception in 2017, Cognite maintains a global workforce of approximately 700 across offices in Texas, Norway, India, and Japan. Rishi explained that while Tempe will become the company's "center of gravity," regional offices worldwide will carry on as "centers of excellence," fostering a continual exchange of talent and ideas across the company's diversified portfolio, as reported by Business Journal.
Arizona's burgeoning tech ecosystem heavily influenced the decision to set up shop in Tempe, its growing pool of talent, and the emphasis on AI innovation at local universities like Arizona State University, which was the first to collaborate with OpenAI, moreover, Rishi's longstanding connection to the Valley dating back to his leadership tenure at Blue Yonder before his current role at Cognite was also a factor. Rishi's historic business relationship with broker Jonathan Keyser, who, alongside his team and Cognite officials, worked tirelessly led to the conclusion that Tempe was the ideal destination for the company's stateside base of operations according to the interview given to the Business Journal.
The economic implications of Cognite's HQ move are expected to ripple through Arizona's tech landscape in a similar vein as TSMC's presence, which has enriched the semiconductor sector in the region. Vis-à-vis local integration, Cognite intends to cultivate partnerships with utility companies, venture capitalists, and educational institutes in Arizona, hoping to implement their AI software to benefit the community at large, fostering innovation and education, Girish Rishi articulated with pride his intentions in an interview with Business Journal.
