College Park residents have a new spot to satisfy their Mexican cuisine cravings. Tamale Co. Modern Mexican Kitchen and Bar will open just before the Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Owners Fernando and Jennifer Tamayo are expanding from their original Hourglass Market spot to the space previously occupied by Mid Drive Dive at 2401 Edgewater Drive. This new establishment aims to replicate the success of its existing ventures, featuring popular tamales, tacos, and Mexican street food with a few unique additions tailored to the College Park community.
The former Mid Drive Dive location failed to retain a foothold in the neighborhood, closing after just nine months. Still, the Tamayos are ready to return to the restaurant game quickly, according to Orlando Weekly. In a press release, they expressed positivity about the new expansion, stating, "Expansion is always in our plans. " They also shared the delightful coincidence that their opening coincides with the arrival of their first child, whom they fondly call "baby Tamayo."
The Tamayos have been in the food business since 2012, starting with their food truck and later serving from within the Hourglass Market. They are no strangers to the cuisine they're so passionate about. According to a notice by Bungalower, the concept behind Tamale Co. College Park mirrors that of its Hourglass ancestor, embracing the same "essence and menu" while introducing dishes specific to the new neighborhood.
With a space spanning 2,935 square feet, the Tamale Co. Modern Mexican Kitchen & Bar seems set to become a local staple. Visitors can look forward to their hand-crafted tamales and a full beverage program, which one might safely assume will fairly showcase tequila and mezcal among its offerings.
