The Westside Community Center in Colorado Springs is currently undergoing a comprehensive makeover, courtesy of the city's Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services. The renovation is set to enhance accessibility for all visitors, a move that has been characterized as crucial to making the facility more inclusive. "This renovation project is a vital step towards making the Westside Community Center a more inclusive and welcoming space," said Felicia Barnhart, WCC parks operations administrator, as obtained by the City of Colorado Springs.
A collaboration with the City’s Office of Accessibility will decidedly make several upgrades, including a new entrance and a lift to the lower levels for restroom access, bringing the building up to the modern standards for ADA compliance. In addition to making the place more navigable, the project ambitiously overhauls the center's HVAC systems and tops up the buildings with new roofs and gutters, ensuring comfort and sustainability. Air conditioning is also on the list to be introduced in buildings that are still missing this now-essential amenity.
The schedule of the renovations has been carefully planned around the community's calendar to avoid interrupting or canceling ongoing programs and community gatherings. Despite the scale of the improvements, the work is expected to roll out smoothly with as little inconvenience as possible to the daily functions of the center, respecting the vibrant schedule of activities that the Westside Community Center is known for.
Funding for the extensive changes comes from the American Rescue Plan Act to the tune of $1.2 million. The deadline is set ambitiously to conclude by December 2025. These changes come alongside a newer operational model for the WCC which began in 2022, a public-private partnership that introduces City management to the community staple while still allowing to flexibly work with external partners and non-profits, a synergy that promises to keep the space financially viable and community-centric.
