Colorado drivers who fancy a foot heavier than the law allows might want to ease up on the gas pedal, as the Colorado State Patrol has identified the top counties and roadways for speed violations in 2024. According to Colorado State Patrol, Col. Matthew C. Packard urged adherence to the rules, expressing the intention not to penalize en masse but to inspire safer driving behaviors, stating, "Citations are meant to correct poor driving choices, and you are literally in the driver's seat to determine the likelihood of a traffic stop."
Last year, troopers handed out the most tickets for speeding in El Paso County with 2,161 violations, followed by Douglas, Jefferson, Fremont, and Mesa counties, respectively. With El Paso, Douglas, and Jefferson recurring as top contenders for these not-so-coveted awards over the past few years, it's a reminder that old habits die-stepping into more speeding offenses hard for some local drivers.
The persistently ticketed roadways in Colorado have also been tabulated, with I70 leading the pack. Along with I25, H50, and H24 maintaining their notorious recognitions for six years straight, H285 joined the ranks in 2022 and has since managed to hold onto its position among the top five. It appears certain stretches of pavement in Colorado have become synonymous with tempting drivers to whiz past the speed limits.
Acting on this data, the State Patrol has tightened its grip on speeding with a strategy of low tolerance towards major crash causes, like lane violations and excess speed. The aptly named "Stop Speeding" campaign is a three-month effort to dismantle the belief of speeding as a victimless act. Troopers are strongly encouraging the mindset to "drive like a trooper is riding with you," advocating for a shift in driving culture where pushing boundaries leads to pushing luck a little too often.
