Community Rallies to Support Choctaw Animal Rescue After Devastating Fire Claims Lives of PetsSource: GoFundMe

Choctaw, Oklahoma, experienced a tragic fire at Fur Ever Friends Animal Rescue, resulting in the loss of both animals and supplies. Early Tuesday morning, Diane Ketterling, the rescue’s owner, attempted to save as many dogs as she could from the blaze. According to KOCO, Ketterling entered the burning building, rescuing dogs in an effort to protect them from the fire.

Despite her heroic efforts, not all the animals were saved. Choctaw Police reported that 23 dogs were rescued, but 12 died in the fire. Additionally, 17 goats were lost in the blaze. A family member of the rescue’s owner, captured on video, described Diane’s frantic attempts to free the dogs as the barn burned, according to OKC FOX.

Local businesses like Bob Moore Subaru in Edmond and Dirty Dogs Wash and Groom in Choctaw offering donation drop-off points. Volunteers and other rescues have stepped in to provide temporary shelter for the surviving animals. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist in rebuilding Fur Ever Friends Rescue and to help with recovery efforts.

Kim West, a friend of the rescue, spoke with KFOR about the emotional and practical impact of the fire, highlighting Diane’s concerns for the animals’ well-being, including the risk of frostbite from exposure. The immediate need for dog food, leashes, collars, and blankets was emphasized, as these essential items were lost in the fire.
