A Windsor, Connecticut man's early morning escapade ended behind bars after he allegedly stole a fire department pickup truck and began conducting fake police stops on Interstate 91 in Massachusetts. Massachusetts State Police apprehended 46-year-old Kristian Avery, managing to bring what could have been a dangerous situation to a close without further incident.
According to a report by Boston 25 News, suspicious motor vehicle stops conducted by the driver of the stolen Windsor Fire Department pickup had been reported along the stretch of the interstate in Northampton and Whatley. The driver would use emergency lights to pull over drivers, interact with them, and then leave the scene without identifying himself.
The search for the stolen vehicle concluded near a rest area of the Deerfield Weigh Station at mile marker 37, where Avery was apprehended after a pursuit. Troopers and officers from the Deerfield Police Department were able to stop the truck using strategically placed stop sticks.
Further investigation revealed a distressing prelude to the highway pursuit. A statement obtained by MassLive outlined how Avery allegedly broke into the Windsor firehouse, attempted to set a fire, and then made off with the pickup truck, setting the stage for the subsequent events.
Facing multiple charges including receiving stolen property, impersonating a police officer, failure to stop for police, negligent operation, and improper use of emergency lights, Avery's actions have led to a serious legal predicament, with the incident still under active investigation.
