A Cook County sheriff's deputy, Shamone Duncan, was killed in a tragic incident of stray gunfire while on vacation in Turks and Caicos. The 50-year-old, 20-year veteran of the county's Department of Corrections, was at a bar in the town of Providenciales on Saturday night when the shooting occurred.
A resident, Dario Stubbs, also lost his life in the incident, with a third victim, a 29-year-old man, wounded and undergoing medical treatment. "There is no evidence to suggest that Ms. Duncan, Mr. [Dario] Stubbs or the wounded victim were the targets of this incident," the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force indicated in a statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Cook County sheriff's office expressed their devastation over the incident. "Our hearts are broken for the family of Deputy Shamone Duncan," said a spokesperson in a statement cited by CBS News Chicago. The office is providing support to Duncan's grieving family and her colleagues who are grappling with the terrible news. Duncan had been assigned to Cermak Health Services at Cook County Jail prior to the tragedy.
Duncan's family released a heartfelt statement, remembering her as the cornerstone of their family. "Shamone was the heart of our family—a devoted mother, grandmother, and sister who loved fiercely and gave selflessly. She was our rock, and her loss is beyond words," the family conveyed through CBS News Chicago. They described her dedication to her community and honored the legacy she leaves behind.
