A Corpus Christi man, who pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, has been sentenced to more than a decade in federal prison. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani yesterday. Jose Humberto Morales, 45, will spend 130 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos handed down the sentence after taking into account Morales' extensive criminal background that dates back to 1996 and features more than 10 state convictions for burglary. The court noted the "serious and recidivist nature of his criminal behavior" during sentencing. On May 5, 2023, Morales was arrested on outstanding warrants and found to be in possession of over 50 grams of meth in three separate baggies, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Homeland Security Investigations and the Corpus Christi Police Department led the investigation that ultimately brought Morales to justice. During a jail call, which was later obtained by law enforcement, Morales admitted that the meth he was carrying was intended for distribution. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley Martin prosecuted the case involving Morales, who is known to be a gang member with a significant history of criminal activity. Morales is currently in custody and will be transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
