The CSU Channel Islands campus was evacuated on Thursday morning, as a brush fire rapidly spread across the Camarillo area, prompting immediate action from firefighting crews. Dubbed the Laguna Fire, the blaze was first reported at around 9 a.m., with the Ventura County Fire Department responding to the incident near Laguna Road and Hueneme Road. The fire swiftly consumed approximately 15 acres, driven by winds gusting as fast as 35 to 45 miles per hour, according to the KTLA.
Firefighters, assisted by water-dropping aircraft, "aggressively attacking" the flames, were on the scene shortly after the fire's eruption. Around 100 firefighters had been dispatched by 9:15 am to battle the advancing threat, as declared by the KTLA. The National Weather Service has acknowledged the powerful gusts prevalent in the area, which have not only fueled the fire but also pose severe challenges for containment efforts. Mandatory evacuation orders were in effect for CSU Channel Islands, although the authorities stated that the campus was not in immediate danger.
This environmental ordeal unfolds under a red flag warning for Ventura and Los Angeles counties, indicating a heightened risk of fire due to strong winds and dry conditions. "Red flag fire weather warnings are in effect for parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties into Friday," as NBC Los Angeles reported.
Evacuees from the area were directed to a temporary shelter established at the Camarillo Community Center, located at 1605 E. Burnley Street, Camarillo. Road closures include Potrero Road and Lewis Road, meant to facilitate emergency responders and prevent public access to the affected zones, as stated by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. For updates on the status of the Laguna Fire, residents and concerned parties are directed to follow reports from local authorities and agencies involved in the firefighting and evacuation operations.
