According to a report from ABC7 New York, this trial is currently limited to registered loyalty members who can now forgo the annoyance of seeking employee assistance and instead, open glass cabinets with their smartphones via the CVS Health app.

The initiative is in its nascent stages, operating in a trio of New York City stores situated in Midtown East, the Upper West Side, and Soho. Shoppers must download the app and join the Extra Care program to utilize this feature. It operates by simply scanning a barcode using the app in front of a smart lock, provided users have connected to the store's Wi-Fi. However, it's not without its kinks; Pedro Rivera, an Eyewitness News reporter, experienced difficulty when attempting to open the locks in two test locations.

Speaking to the efficacy of the system, a local CVS shopper, Janaye Day, told ABC7 New York, "I downloaded it like three weeks ago, it only worked for me once and I come here like three times a week." CVS has acknowledged these technological teething problems but pledges to continue refining the system, stating through a spokesperson, "there is no system outage impacting the smart locks."

Expanding upon the premise of this pilot, CVS has set its sights on the West Coast, where it intends to roll out the "smart locks" at approximately a 10 more stores, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance customer experience. As reported by The New York Times, CVS Health spokeswoman Tara Burke shared, "Customers like the convenience of being able to open the cases and not having to wait for a CVS colleague to help if one isn’t immediately available." This push towards self-service reflects broader changes in retail where businesses strive to balance security measures with consumer access and satisfaction.

Moreover, the modernization does not stop with unlocking cabinets. CVS is ambitiously positioning its app as a comprehensive digital hub for personal healthcare management. Every aspect from medical appointment organization to prescription refills will be streamlined within the app's ecosystem. Brittain Ladd, a strategy and supply chain consultant, lauded this multifaceted approach to customer experience by stating in a statement obtained by The New York Times, "It truly does become a pharmacist in your pocket." With such technological leaps, CVS is reinventing the wheel for physical stores in light of the competition posed by online pharmacies and retailers.
