As the cold snap continues its grip on Dallas, the Office of Homeless Solutions is keeping up the Temporary Inclement Weather Shelter (TIWS) this week to provide refuge for those in need. Adhering to the city's safety net, the TIWS will remain operational until it's clear that the freezing conditions fall outside the predefined triggers of Chapter 45 of the City Code. Notably, the shelters are meant to stay open when the temperatures are predicted to drop below 36 degrees in wet weather or 32 degrees in dry weather for an extended period between 4 pm and 8 am.

Dallas residents in dire straits can locate the TIWS at two primary sites – Fair Park Grand Place and Austin Street II. The sites actively accept residents, with 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. intake hours. However, the Fair Park Tower Building closed its doors yesterday after 2 pm, as the needs have shifted. According to an official statement from the City of Dallas, "Austin Street Center will operate the sites as the City’s external partner in executing TIWS activities, providing enhanced services during TIWS."

Since last Sunday, the TIWS has been pivotal in safeguarding the city's homeless population against the winter's wrath. As conditions are forecast to extend until today, the town is on standby to continue this essential service, with daily activation notifications expected by noon, which can be followed on the OHS website. Dallas citizens without a roof can also seek shelter at various overnight provider locations across the city.

Seeking to make a direct impact, Dallasites with a spirit to assist are encouraged to leverage their potential by calling 311 before 10 p.m. for transport to a shelter or 911 after hours for emergencies.
