Stepping up its efforts to increase city-wide emergency response readiness, the City of Dallas, through its Office of Emergency Management & Crisis Response, has launched a new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training Course, according to a recent news update. The free program, kicking off on January 12, offers Dallas residents the chance to develop crucial skills to manage emergencies effectively.
With the winter's bite bringing temperatures down, the Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions is also taking preemptive action by activating the Temporary Inclement Weather Shelter (TIWS) at Fair Park Grand Place to provide respite for the homeless against the frigid weather. This initiative was detailed in an earlier announcement by the City of Dallas, which stated that the shelter would remain open "until overnight temperatures are forecasted to be above freezing."
Moving from emergency preparedness to community empowerment, the city will honor civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through its annual MLK Celebration Week, starting January 10. This series of events, hosted in collaboration with various community partners, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., aims to encourage public reflection on Dr. King’s enduring legacy and to promote his message of equality, justice, and unity.
Residents interested in participating in the CERT training can find more details on the course schedule by visiting the city's official blog. In contrast, those who wish to find solace during the TIWS operation can head to Fair Park Grand Place, located at 3701 Grand Ave., Dallas, TX.
