The City agency confirmed that the Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS) in Dallas began methodically closing down the Temporary Inclement Weather Shelter (TIWS) yesterday. The phased shutdown comes as weather conditions have improved, meaning the shelter's operational triggers are no longer being met. Despite this, Fair Park Grand Place, located at 3701 Grand Ave., Dallas, TX, 75210, will keep its doors open through the closure but will not accept new guests, per the OHS.
As the last guests are ushered out, the OHS ensures that individuals using the shelter's services can safely leave. To facilitate this transition smoothly, the Austin Street Center has been chosen to distribute Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) passes. The official TIWS bulletin confirmed that guests benefit more from the Austin Street Connector's transportation support.
According to the City of Dallas, the OHS emphasizes its commitment "to closely monitor weather conditions and adjust our strategies accordingly to accommodate all those in need," as per their statement. This approach suggests a balance they are trying to strike: to avoid prematurely keeping open emergency shelters while maintaining readiness for any sudden turn in the weather.
