An explosion in a Wendy's parking lot off 6th Avenue and Speer Boulevard rattled central Denver late Thursday night, as reported by 9News. Denver Police arrived on the scene shortly after reports began surfacing around 10:10 p.m., cordoning off the area to the public for investigation.
According to CBS News, the bomb squad was called to thoroughly examine a suspicious vehicle parked in the Wendy's drive-thru, utilizing a bomb squad robot and a drone for a closer inspection. Officers proactively established a large perimeter as a precaution to ensure the safety of nearby denizens.
Further adding to the tension of the night, the FOX31 newsroom, which sits directly across from the explosion site, reported a loud noise and the subsequent shaking of their building just after the 10 p.m. hour. FOX31 also noted the significant police and fire department presence that quickly dominated the scene.
While the official cause of the explosion has not been determined nor has there been any immediate report of injuries or fatalities, the surrounding streets, including 6th Avenue, were shut down as part of the response protocols. These streets have since been reopened, signaling a return to normalcy for local commuters. The Denver Police Department has not yet released any information regarding potential suspects or the motive behind the incident.
