The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is gearing up to welcome Denver into its fold, announcing that a new team will bring professional women's soccer to the city by 2026. It's a significant move for Denver, marking its debut in hosting a major women’s professional sports team. Fans can expect to see a roster that might include national favorites and star power from Coloradans Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson, who have made their mark on soccer fields worldwide.
According to KDVR, Denver's team will join the ranks of revered players like Alex Morgan and international legend Marta Vieira da Silva, bringing highly anticipated games to the Mile High City. Meanwhile, NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman has expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, as obtained by Reuters, "As the NWSL continues its rapid growth, we knew it was critical to launch our 16th team in a city with a passionate sports culture and vibrant fan base, and Denver is the perfect match."
The Denver team's ownership is a formidable lineup, led by IMA Financial Group CEO Rob Cohen, and includes sports and business luminaries such as former Washington Commanders President Jason Wright and FirstTracks Sports Ventures LLC. Furthermore, the ownership collective, which comes replete with sibling entrepreneurs Jon-Erik Borgen and Kaia Borgen Moritz, along with Neelima Joshi and Dhiren Jhaveri and not forgetting Molly Coors, is working on plans to construct a dedicated stadium and performance facility tailored for the team.
A grassroots initiative dubbed "For Denver FC," fronted by former NWSL player and analyst Jordan Angeli, and associates Tom Dunmore, Nicole Glaros, and Ben Hubbard, was instrumental in bringing Cohen aboard for the Denver NWSL project, as per CBS Sports. The community's spirit will be harnessed to cultivate a solid supporter base as the team's identity including the name, brand, crest, and colors is still in the works and set to be unveiled at a later time.
