A Detroit man has been charged with a cascade of felonies after allegedly carrying out two separate shootings at the home of a Highland Park police officer in Warren, according to reports. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Dashaun Lewis, is said to have fired at the officer's home late Sunday night, damaging property and returning in the early hours of Monday to shoot again, nearly hitting people outside the home. The disturbing case follows a series of gunfire that punctuated the neighborhood's usual calm, raising alarm amongst the local community.
As reported by ClickOnDetroit, Lewis allegedly initiated the potentially deadly assault by discharging a firearm five times at the officer's residence on Sunday. The Highland Park police officer, whose identity has been withheld, found his house and a vehicle damaged. Returning to the scene under cover of night's shroud barely a few hours later, Lewis is accused of leading a second round of gunfire, confronting three persons, including the officer, with the barrel of his gun, though fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident.
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office delivered a stark message regarding the gravity of these actions. In a statement obtained by The Detroit News, Prosecutor Peter Lucido remarked, "These allegations are extremely serious and deeply concerning." He further emphasized the community's jeopardy, asserting, "This brazen act of violence not only caused significant property damage but also put the safety of the entire community at risk." Lucido affirmed his office's determination to seek justice to ensure the security of all residents.
In the wake of the shootings, Warren police officers managed to locate the suspect with the help of a drone, a telling testament to the increasingly vital role of technology in modern law enforcement. Lewis was subsequently arraigned on ten felony charges including three counts of assault with intent to murder. As per information from MLive, he faces life imprisonment if convicted. The two incidents prompted Judge Michael Chupa to set two separate bonds: $300,000 for the Sunday incident and an augmented $600,000 for the Monday shooting. Pending the legal proceedings, Lewis will be confined away from society, awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for January 16 at 9:30 a.m.
