Downtown Austin’s Rainey Street Closed Amid Gas Leak, Hazmat Teams and Fire Department Respond to Construction Accident

A downtown Austin street became a hub of emergency response as construction crews accidentally struck a gas line Tuesday morning, causing authorities to issue a warning for public safety. The incident took place at 80 Rainey Street, where workers hit the gas line while performing construction, reported CBS Austin. In response, Rainey Street was closed to traffic in both directions with the hazmat taskforce working on scene, the Austin Fire Department was alerted to the incident around 9:14 a.m., and they acted promptly, though no injuries have been recorded so far. As per reports from KVUE, the gas line which was ruptured about two feet below the surface, was contained by AFD by 9:47 a.m., bringing a temporary sigh of relief to the immediate danger posed by the leak.

While AFD's initial involvement brought the situation under control, the longer-term resolution awaited the arrival of Texas Gas Service crews who were expected on the scene to make the necessary repairs and ensure safety in the long term.
