An 18-wheeler, pulled over on Interstate 10, became the center of an unexpected discovery when Guadalupe County Sheriff's deputies found 18 immigrants hidden inside the tanker it was hauling. This incident occurred around 2 p.m. yesterday, as reported by the News 4 San Antonio. The stop was made on an exit ramp along the interstate.
The driver is currently being held, for questioning in connection with what appears to be a case of human smuggling. Each of the 18 individuals found in the tanker, originating from countries including El Salvador, Ecuador, Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala, were evaluated for injuries following their removal from the confined space. Fortunately, none were harmed in the ordeal. Subsequently, they were provided with sustenance – food and water, in this particular moment of respite from their undisclosed journey.
Following the initial law enforcement intervention, the immigrants were turned over to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Authorities from both the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Homeland Security are conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attempted smuggling, as KSAT detailed in their reporting.
