A Dublin man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to intentionally damaging his former employer's computer systems. Vamsikrishna Naganathanahalli, 49, faced charges for his actions following his termination from MedAmerica, Inc., part of the Vituity group of companies, where he was previously employed as a Senior HCM Architect, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

According to the details of his plea agreement, Naganathanahalli admitted that on May 28, 2022, he used his access to a privileged service account to change another employee's password without authorization. In September, after his employment ended, he uploaded "dummy" data overwriting valid records for around 90 percent of Vituity employees. This resulted in his employer suffering losses upwards of $400,000, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.

U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ordered Naganathanahalli to serve 18 months imprisonment, pay $400,930 in restitution, and a $300 special assessment besides the prison term; following his release, he will also undergo three years of supervised release, starting his sentence on July 20. This sentence marks the close of a case demonstrating the severity of misuse of access privileges and the substantial harm an individual can inflict on corporate infrastructure.

United States Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey, along with FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Dan Costin, announced the sentencing, stating that the action serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of cyber misconduct, the prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michelle J. Kane and Nikhil Bhagat, they received assistance from Kathy Tat, and the occurrence stemmed from an investigation by the FBI.
