In a social media post on the Durham Police Department's Facebook page, the authorities listed several preventive measures, including locking cars and not leaving valuables or firearms in them. The department, having outlined a series of practices to help keep Durham safe, also emphasized the importance of parking in well-lit areas and being vigilant about one's surroundings. Notably, they also advised against leaving spare keys in vehicles or allowing vehicles to run unattended, underscoring the link between heedless habits and the risk of becoming a victim. Many victims have reported leaving their bags or purses in plain sight, a misplaced act of trust in the public space.
Residents are also being implored to utilize any anti-theft systems or vehicle alarms they might have at their disposal. "Report suspicious activity to 911 immediately," the post added by the Durham Police Department, "When in doubt, call 911." This appeal to community vigilance is part of a broader initiative to involve Durham citizens in the collective responsibility of reducing crime rates in the area.
