A tragic incident has taken place on Baymeadows Road where a 75-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed after a collision with a vehicle. The event marks the sixth traffic-related fatality in Jacksonville this year, as News4Jax reported.
Action News Jax reports that the accident occurred shortly before midnight yesterday, with the victim identified as Vasil Kovllari. While the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) continues to investigate the crash, initial witness reports suggest the vehicle, a four-door sedan with two passengers, had a green light at the time of the collision. JSO also noted that Kovllari appeared to have been crossing against a red light.
The driver of the vehicle, a woman whose identity has not been disclosed, fled the scene on foot after the incident, leaving the vehicle and its passengers behind. She was later found hiding in nearby bushes by police officers and taken into custody. According to First Coast News, JSO Lieutenant Eanes confirmed the woman was "quickly found" by patrol officers.
Traffic homicide detectives are continuing their investigation to gather more details about the incident.
