An Everett police officer has been placed under arrest on allegations of assaulting her ex-boyfriend, who is also a police officer, during an incident at a supermarket, officials reported. Marie Sylvain, 27, was taken into custody as she reported for work at the Everett Police Department last night, per details shared by WHDH.
The confrontation unfolded at a Stop and Shop store in Malden where Sylvain's ex-boyfriend was working a police detail, he requested that she leave, but she refused, and the situation escalated to violence, the victim stated in a report to the police, the repercussions of their September 2023 separation now finding their paths crossing again in a tempest of conflict and accusation. The court has since issued a restraining order against Sylvain, as advised by the presiding judge. "You are to stay away, have no contact," the judge instructed Sylvain, along with a directive to not possess any dangerous weapons or firearms, as was reported by WHDH.
Charged with two counts of assault and battery, Sylvain appeared in court Tuesday and was released on her own recognizance. According to a report by WCVB, prosecutors allege that not only did she bite him, but "The defendant in this case bit the victim in his face and refused to let go of him, and punched him multiple times." Further alleged is that a second assault occurred later at the victim's home, compounding the charges against Sylvain.
Sylvain's defense attorney, Terrence Kennedy, has conveyed that his client denies the charges and has described her as an "extremely nice person," despite the gravity of what is alleged and the damning implications of those allegations; Sylvain has been placed on administrative leave, which is the customary step in such cases involving law enforcement officers, he remarked to WCVB. After the incident, Sylvain remained silent when questioned in court if she bit someone.
Sworn in as an Everett Police Officer in 2022, the arrest raises not only questions about the officer's conduct but also highlights the broader concerns about police accountability and interpersonal violence. The case continues to unfold as the accused awaits further legal proceedings.
