A tragic accident unfolded on I-94 near Kalamazoo on Tuesday morning. One person, a 37-year-old woman from Richland, lost her life in a solo vehicle incident that compelled westbound lanes of the freeway to close temporarily, as per FOX 17.
According to MLive, the accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. between Portage Road and Westnedge Avenue, near the Lovers Lane overpass. An SUV veered off the right side of the highway and overturned. Emergency services closed all westbound lanes for approximately 10 minutes, and the right lane and shoulder remained closed for ongoing investigation efforts.
Witnesses informed Michigan State Police that the vehicle initially struck the median divider, which sent it across the westbound lanes and into a ditch, resulting in it flipping over. This was subsequently confirmed by troopers who pronounced the woman dead at the scene, as reported by WOOD TV. The name of the woman was not immediately released.
Investigators are in the process of determining whether the woman was wearing a seatbelt and if impairment from alcohol or drugs played a role in the fatal event. No other passengers were in the car and, fortunately, no other individuals were injured. The highway has since been reopened fully, according to FOX 17.
