A tragic incident occurred in Torrance when a driver was killed after their car, a 2025 Tesla Model Y, crashed into a traffic pole and burst into flames. The accident took place around 10:15 p.m. near the intersection of Madrona Avenue and Plaza Del Amo, as reported by CBS News Los Angeles. Torrance Police Department responded to the severe single-car crash and found the vehicle fully engulfed in fire with an occupant trapped inside.
Efforts of the first responders were made more complex by the car's lithium-ion batteries, which "complicated" their attempts to control the blaze, "Officers made valiant efforts to gain access to the vehicle; however, due to the intensity of the flames and heat, they were unable to rescue the occupant." stated the Torrance Police Department in a news release covered by MyNewsLA. Despite the Torrance Fire Department's rapid response to the scene to extinguish the fire, they too faced hurdles due to the vehicle's specific battery type.
The identity of the driver has not been disclosed, pending the notification of relatives. The intersection where the crash took place was closed for approximately five hours to allow for a thorough investigation by traffic investigators. A previous incident in September of 2024 involved an overturned big rig carrying lithium-ion batteries which led to a massive fire, illustrating the ongoing challenges first responders face with such materials, as per a statement retrieved by KTLA.
As the incident remains under investigation, the Torrance Police Department is urging anyone with information about the collision to get in contact by calling the department’s traffic division at 310-618-5557, according to MyNewsLA.
