Floridians are witnessing a milestone in education as Governor Ron DeSantis proclaimed more than half a million students have now enrolled in the state's school choice scholarship program, according to a recent announcement from the governor's office. This surge in participation signals growing interest from parents and students in finding educational paths best suited to the students' individual needs. "Florida is the number one state for education because of our commitment to providing every student with the option that works best for them," Governor DeSantis stated. Joining the momentum, the New Worlds Scholarship Accounts Program has also seen an uptick, with over 30,000 students participating, and an added 18,000 are taking advantage of the transportation stipend made possible by House Bill 1 from 2023.

House Bill 1, signed by Governor DeSantis in 2023, was a game-changer in the realm of school choice, tearing down financial restrictions and enrollment caps, providing a broader platform for scholarships, and introducing the Personalized Education Program for those not entirely enrolled within the public or private sectors, this bill has indeed reshaped the educational infrastructure within the state. As per the provisions of the bill, there's a financial pathway for students to pursue options most fitting to their individual learning styles and needs, including personalized plans for families opting for a less traditional educational route.
Breaking down 2024-25 data, it's clear that these programs are being embraced statewide; more than 524,000 scholarships awarded under the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship, Florida Empowerment Scholarship for Educational Options, and the Florida Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Disabilities—with 107,000 falling into the Personalized Education Plans category, 295,105 into the Education Options scholarships and 121,907 designated for Students with Disabilities, plus over 30,000 students are now beneficiaries of the New Worlds Scholarship Accounts, while another 18,000 are leveraging the transportation stipend to access schools beyond their zone.
