The former head of the Monessen Fire Department in Westmoreland County is under scrutiny for alleged financial misconduct, with accusations that he embezzled over $30,000 from the department's funds. As WTAE reported, the chairman of the board of directors for the Monessen Fire Department discovered discrepancies after requesting that Stephen Gaydos III close a bank account. Gaydos responded by returning a mere seven dollars.
Investigations reveal that Gaydos, who now faces charges including theft and misapplication of entrusted property, covertly maintained a debit card linked to the fire department's finances—an action unbeknownst to other board members—through which he allegedly conducted unauthorized transactions. When confronted, he admitted to usurping the funds. CBS News Pittsburgh detailed his arraignment and release on a $100,000 unsecured bond, set for his next court appearance.
The illicit activities reportedly span several years, dating back to December 2020. Bank statements expose transactions at various retail outlets, such as Family Dollar and Lowe's Harbor Freight, and even Cricket Wireless purchases. According to official accounts, the total amount of unaccounted expenditures was nearly $31,600. This was after the board of directors initially allowed Gaydos to restitute the missing monies, reaching out to law enforcement following several missed deadlines and extensions.
As president, Gaydos was responsible for overseeing the fire department's finances. However, trust was broken when the board discovered continued activity on the account and a secret debit card, leading to charges. These charges are now under investigation in Westmoreland County, and Gaydos' future with the department is in jeopardy due to a breach of trust.
