In a display of law enforcement diligence, the Happy Valley Police Department has successfully retrieved a stolen bicycle valued at $5,000 belonging to a Marine Corps veteran from Vancouver, WA. Reported missing in May of 2024, the hand-built bicycle was the pride of Javier Romo. According to a press release from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, the recovery is the result of a collaborative investigation between the Happy Valley and Vancouver Police Departments.
Investigators were tipped off to the possibility of the bike's presence in Happy Valley, leading them to definitively secure a warrant for a search in the area. On December 5, 2024, the operation led to the recovery of the stolen property, though the bike had been disassembled, its parts distributed across other frames. Thomas Jospeh Mendoza, the apartment's resident, was interviewed, and a first-degree theft charge was recommended to the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office for consideration.
Before the bike could be returned to its rightful owner, a task of reassembling was at hand. A Community Service Officer with the Sheriff's Office, skilled in bicycle repair, managed to meticulously identify and collect Mr. Romo's original bicycle parts. Over the course of an intensive search, those pieces, spread across other bikes, were reclaimed.
Finally, on January 23, 2025, the reassembled bike was formally returned to an undoubtedly relieved Romo. "On Thursday, January 23, 2025, the bicycle was returned to Mr. Romo, bringing a months-long investigation to a successful conclusion," the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office stated. The resolve and inter-agency cooperation underscore the services provided by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office to Happy Valley, Estacada, and Wilsonville, three cities with which they contract for municipal police services.
