Amidst an uptick in DUI arrests on Hawai‘i Island, concerns rise as numbers reflect a sobering reality. Over a single week, spanning January 13 through January 19, Hawai‘i Island police apprehended 17 motorists for driving under the influence, as reported by Hawaii Police Department. Among those arrested, five were involved in traffic accidents, and notably, one was a minor under the age of 21.

This year, the island has seen a 10.6 percent increase in DUI arrests, with 52 cases already on the books compared with 47 over the same period last year. However, amidst the escalating apprehensions, the number of major crashes surprisingly shows a downturn. Hawai‘i police documented 43 major crashes in comparison to 48 from last year, marking a 10.4 percent decrease.

While DUI arrests are on the rise, there's a thin silver lining when it comes to the most tragic outcomes on the road. Fatal crashes have decreased by 33.3 percent. There have been two fatal crashes leading to two fatalities so far into 2025, contrasting with three fatal crashes resulting in three fatalities in the same timeframe last year.

The Hawai‘i Police Department remains vigilant in their efforts to curb impaired driving. Continuous DUI roadblocks and patrols are confirmed to persist island wide, intent on maintaining public safety and deterring the potential risks drunken drivers pose to themselves and others.
