Fontana became the backdrop for a high-speed chase on Sunday afternoon after deputies responded to a burglar alarm at a local business. The SBSD Fontana Sheriff's Department reported that the Fontana Station deputies were summoned at around 2:39 P.M. to the 15000 block of Whittram Avenue due to an activated commercial alarm. A deputy spotted a vehicle hastily leaving the area and signaled for the driver to stop.
Igniting a chase, the suspect, identified as Ray Belloso, a 50-year-old Riverside resident, accelerated rather than complying, sweeping through red lights and at one point, driving against the flow of traffic, circumstances that could've easily escalated but—perhaps providentially—did not. It was during this frantic evasion, when Belloso's vehicle met an immovable curb, limping to a halt in Rancho Cucamonga at Etiwanda Avenue and Napa Avenue, his endeavor to flee reached its apex and abrupt conclusion.
Belloso and passenger Hugo Dorantes, also 50, from El Monte, were arrested without further ordeal, with concrete evidence of their intent uncovered upon inspection; authorities found items in the vehicle typically associated with burglary. According to the official report released, Belloso faces charges of felony evading and possessing burglary tools, after which he posted bail for his provisional freedom. Dorantes was similarly booked on possession of burglary tools and released, though under the condition of a written promise to later present himself in court.
The investigation turned irony when it was ascertained that the business, originally the fount of the alarm, remained unbreached, untouched by the illicit intentions it seemed to attract. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department continues to implore any person equipped with knowledge of the event to approach them, providing the Fontana Sheriff’s Station contact at (909) 356-6767, while also outlining the option to remain unnamed through the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-78CRIME or the accompanying website where information may be discreetly submitted.
