In the latest efforts to duly acknowledge and combat an ominous issue, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners highlighted a significant societal concern by declaring January 2025 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month. This decision comes amidst reports by the National Human Trafficking Resource Center that place Florida third nationwide in volume of tip calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The Florida Statewide Council on Human Trafficking, with its focus on collaboration between state and local entities, plays a pivotal role in addressing and supporting the victims of these crimes, as chronicled in Hillsborough County's recap of the last Wednesday meeting.
Further discussions at the meeting turned to address the infrastructure growth within the county. A contract was granted to Bandes Construction Company, Inc. for the erection of a new Hillsborough County Fire Rescue facility. This establishment is to largely house a 60,000-square-foot logistics and special operations warehouse, complete with emergency management storage areas for shelter kits and surplus commodities, elaborated in the same report by Hillsborough County officials.
Moreover, after the historic stormwater flooding triggered by the 2024 hurricane season, county commissioners were briefed on a crucial report. The report outlined ongoing evaluations of the flood's cumulative impact and the current state of stormwater systems. The proposed recommendations, aimed to mitigate future disasters, include enhanced capacity for flood storage, new pump stations, as well as adjustments to maintenance scheduling. Stakeholder input and increased interagency cooperation also figure into these strategies.
Similarly, the update on the Bethune Park Master Plan in Wimauma reflects Hillsborough County's commitment to community development. With an intention to both uplift and provide for the Wimauma residents, the proposed vision of the park includes facilities such as a new library and a splash pad to serve the public. The project that pleases to offer generous green spaces, a multipurpose stage and a gathering area comes with an estimated price tag of $43 million. A significant portion of these funds is expected to emanate from library ad valorem assessments and park mobility fees, as noted in the Hillsborough County's announcement.
