An 81-year-old man from Homosassa has been taken into custody on allegations of possessing child pornography following an investigation spearheaded by the Citrus County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) High Tech Crimes Unit (HTCU) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). The discovery of the illegal materials was the result of a concerted effort that began with a Cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), as reported by the CCSO on Facebook.
John Luis Venable was identified as the accused after CCSO's in-depth investigation led to a warranted search of his residence last Thursday, where detectives seized numerous electronic devices that, after a digital forensic examination, were found containing thousands of illegal images and videos. According to CCSO's Facebook post, Detective Ben Wilson of HTCU pointed out the growing trend of predators exploiting the internet as a medium to access and share child pornography, whereas Sergeant Tiffany Barry of HTCU commended Detective Wilson's dedication which culminated in the apprehension of an alleged predator within the community.
Venable faces 12 counts of Possession of Child Pornography and was arrested yesterday, with the Citrus County Detention Facility currently housing him under a $900,000 bond set by Judge Amber Thomas. The CCSO highlighted the importance of their High Tech Crimes Unit's proficiency with the latest technology to track offenders and ensure the ongoing protection of children and the safety of the community at large.
The investigation into this matter is still active, and CCSO encourages the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of child pornography or abuse, particularly by contacting their office directly or through Crime Stoppers of Citrus County, which allows tipsters to stay anonymous and potentially be eligible for a reward. With the CCSO's #OneCommunityOneGoal initiative, they maintain a steadfast resolve in the pursuit of such individuals, to serve justice and fortify the security of Citrus County's younger population.
