Commuters in Houston faced significant disruptions in two separate highway incidents earlier today. A substantial crash on IH-69 northbound, just before Beltway-8 West, resulted in several lanes being closed after an SUV reportedly fell from the HOV flyover ramp onto the freeway below. According to ABC13, eyewitness accounts and helicopter-reported visuals show a significant hole in the retaining wall along the ramp and subsequent debris scattered across the freeway. The driver of the SUV has been injured and was transported to a local hospital.
In the wake of the accident, Houston police were on the scene to manage the ensuing traffic, which led to backups stretching to Highway 6, with delays reported to be at least an hour. Motorists coming from Sugar Land were advised to consider Highway 90 as an alternate route. It is anticipated to be some time before the lanes fully reopen, and commuters should expect sustained congestion.
Meanwhile, on I-45, the North Freeway at Gulf Bank Road, a high-speed police chase culminated in a crash involving four vehicles, necessitating the shutdown of all northbound lanes. Click2Houston reports that the lanes have since been reopened, and a man has been taken into custody by the Harris County Pct. 4 Constable’s Office in connection to the chase. No information on injuries sustained in the crash has been released at this time.
For those seeking to navigate these abrupt closures and traffic jams, real-time traffic updates are available. ABC13 encourages drivers to sign up for traffic alerts, which can be sent straight to mobile devices through their app, potentially helping to better plan and adjust routes in response to such unpredictable events.
