An abandoned apartment complex in Spring Branch West went up in flames earlier this month, highlighting the risks of urban decay. The Houston Fire Department reported the fire broke out last Sunday at 2:04 a.m. on Conrad Sauer Dr. at Westview Dr. Due to the danger of collapse, firefighters battled the blaze from outside, unable to enter the hazardous structure.
Despite the danger inherent in the decrepit bones of the building, no injuries were reported in the fray. While the Houston Fire Department has not yet released information on the extent of the property saved or the damage incurred, the scene they arrived to was one of historical caution, marred by previous incidents and structural vulnerabilities. The teams cut through the fence and launched a defensive attack, a strategy required by the apartment's condition.
According to the fire department's briefing, this wasn't a lone effort but a collective pushback by 35 personnel from various stations, including Stations 5, 78, 49, 69, 77, 38, and 57. The fire was eventually controlled and extinguished, but arson investigators from the HFD are still working to determine its cause and origin.
