Houston authorities are currently piecing together the circumstances surrounding a tragic incident on the city's North Freeway that resulted in the death of a 48-year-old man last Saturday evening. The Houston Police Department is leading the investigation into the crash, which occurred near the 3300 block of North Interstate Highway 45 shortly after 8:30 p.m.
According to a statement made by the HPD, the unidentified man was struck by a blue Volkswagen Atlas while he was in one of the southbound main lanes of the freeway. The driver, a 46-year-old male, attempted to quickly swerve to avoid the man but was unable to prevent the collision. After the incident, he proceeded to the nearest exit and urgently called the police.
The Houston Fire Department paramedics were dispatched to the scene, where they pronounced the victim deceased. As of now, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences has yet to publicly verify the identity of the deceased. The HPD Vehicular Crimes Division, Sergeant Y. Ramirez and Officer C. Moralez are leading the ongoing investigation.
During the initial assessment, the driver of the Volkswagen Atlas showed no signs of impairment and was subsequently questioned and released by the authorities. This incident adds to a long list of pedestrian-related fatalities that continue to concern residents and city officials. "The male ran across the freeway near the above address and stopped in one of the southbound main lanes," as reported by the HPD.
