As Houston still recovers from last week's historic winter storm, residents are bracing for another weather challenge, with a series of heavy rain events on the horizon. The National Weather Service reports showers and potential thunderstorms throughout today, with a strong chance of precipitation reaching 80 percent. Conditions are expected to somewhat ease up momentarily before another cold front pushes through the area, bringing more rain into the week.
According to the Houston Chronicle, "off-and-on showers and weak storms are expected through the morning hours to around noon," with temperatures staying in the 60s. It's projected that by afternoon, more intense rainfall will move into the Houston metro area, with an anticipated total of 1 to 1.5 inches of rain and possibly higher in isolated areas, which might lead to minor urban flooding.
This week's weather scenario will give residents a taste of variability, with Monday and Tuesday signaling a relative respite. The forecast calls for cloudy skies and lower chances of rainfall, with temperatures hovering in the low 60s and then increasing into the mid to upper 60s as the week progresses. However, this short break is only the calm before another stormy period.
Mid-week forecasts suggest that residents should to fully prepare for substantial rainfall, as a strong low-pressure system makes its way toward Southeast Texas. "This weather system will provide the energy necessary for multiple rounds of rainfall, starting Wednesday night and continuing into Friday," per the Houston Chronicle. Expected rainfall from Wednesday through Friday is pegged at 2 to 4 inches, with the potential for higher amounts in certain areas. The primary concern will naturally shift towards flooding, particularly in zones that might catch the brunt of the deluge.
