Houston police are currently investigating a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a male suspect yesterday morning at approximately 8:10 a.m. The confrontation took place at 9900 Homestead Road, according to a press release from the City of Houston. Details concerning the identity of the deceased are still pending as the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences has yet to verify the individual's identity.
The officer involved, J. Avila, who has been with the Houston Police Department (HPD) since May 2022 and serves in the Northeast Patrol Division, was not harmed during the incident. The event unfolded after HPD officers responded to a reported vehicle burglary involving an armed suspect with a sharp object in the 7300 block of Caddo Road. The officers located and attempted to approach the suspect, who fled on foot. After a short chase, he resisted attempts to be detained, leading to a physical altercation. During the struggle, the suspect managed to grab an officer's weapon and discharge it inadvertently, as reported by HPD’s Special Investigations Unit Detectives J. Windham, A. Henderson, and K. Vu.
During the struggle, the suspect reportedly mounted one of the officers and attempted to remove the officer's firearm from its holster. As per the official city news release, "the suspect then grabbed the officer’s duty weapon and, as he attempted to remove it from the holster, he fired a shot while the weapon was still holstered." Officer Avila, upon hearing the gunshot and perceiving a threat to the officer’s life, subsequently discharged his weapon at least twice, striking the suspect. Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.
The circumstances that led to the fatal shooting are subject to rigorous procedures, as is standard practice for officer-involved shootings within Houston city limits. The investigation involves multiple layers of scrutiny from the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
