The Houston Police Department has reported the arrest of 17-year-old Joshua Garcia in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred last year. Garcia, charged with murder, is accused of the July 20, 2024, homicide of 14-year-old Abraham Choukair. The shooting took place at an apartment complex located at 8800 Hammerly Boulevard. According to the City of Houston, the young male victim was found unresponsive in a parked vehicle with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Initial descriptions of the alleged shooter were vague, labeled only as a Hispanic male sporting a black hooded sweatshirt and blue pants. After releasing surveillance photos and conducting a further investigation, authorities identified Garcia as the suspect, which led to the issuance of a warrant for his arrest. Garcia was taken into custody without incident yesterday by deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, as stated in the same news release.
A second suspect, a 16-year-old female whose name has not been disclosed due to her age, was also apprehended and referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities on a charge of capital murder. She was detained on October 15, 2024, also without incident. Details surrounding her role in the crime have not been made public.
The homicide division, led by Detectives M. Barrow and J. Caten, disclosed that the victim, Choukair, was last seen discussing with a female in the parking lot. This was moments before the crime occurred, suggesting that the interaction may have played a part in the events leading up to the shooting.
