The Independence Police Department has recently alerted the public to an emerging scam that targets residents with unsolicited and potentially dangerous gift cards, according to a statement obtained by News 5 Cleveland. These gift cards, priced at $500 and with a personalized "thank you" note, have started appearing in mailboxes across South Great Oaks Parkway.

Residents have been advised not to scan the QR codes accompanying these cards for fear of being lured into a trap where their personal and financial information could be at risk. "When we looked at it, it seemed unusual and we were concerned because it was multiple residents," said Lieutenant Greg Tinnirelo in an interview with Cleveland19. Envelopes collected by the police and scanned using a secured device led to a web of deceit, replete with numerous links prompting unsuspecting individuals to part with their money.

Michael Dighero, an Independence resident who received one of the dubious gift cards, expressed his unease at being targeted. "I mean they have my address and they are trying to scam us, so I don’t really like that too much," Dighero told Cleveland19. Frustration mounts when the arrow of trickery pierces safety, and community vigilance has become tantamount for a place like Independence.

These concerns are not isolated to Independence alone. Similar reports have emerged recently in other cities, marking an unnerving trend of increased sophistication in scams, details of which can be surmised from various social media posts by law enforcement agencies. Building on the warnings, Independence police have cautioned the community, especially the most vulnerable populations, to be wary of unsolicited gift cards, noting that such overtures are rarely made by legitimate businesses, as mentioned in a post by WKYC.

Residents who have received these questionable envelopes are urged to retain them and submit them as evidence to the Independence Police Department. Moreover, they are encouraged to disseminate this information to safeguard their neighbors and loved ones from such deceitful practices. The Independence Police are diligently forwarding this information to state investigators and have been notifying key community establishments, including local senior centers and the post office, about the ongoing scam.
