After facing closure due to severe winter weather conditions, Interstate 29 in Northwest Missouri has now reopened, as per reports from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). The stretch of freeway, spanning from mile marker 110 near Rock Port in Atchison County to mile marker 56 north of St. Joseph in Andrew County, was shut down by the Missouri State Highway Patrol yesterday at 5:30 p.m.
According to MoDOT, which released the update today, the road is now passable in both directions. This comes as a relief especially since the closure had undoubtedly impacted travel plans and the flow of commerce. The interstate, having been blanketed by snow and ice, posed significant hazards to travelers before crews were able to make it safe for travel once again.
As traffic resumes on I-29, travelers are encouraged to continue exercising caution and to stay informed on the condition of the roads during winter, which, swiftly changing, can present new challenges. MoDOT has advised drivers to remain vigilant for icy patches and to keep a safe distance from other vehicles, given that, even after reopening, winter conditions can persist to make driving treacherous.
