Tragedy struck Jacksonville's Westside earlier today when a driver in a newer model Nissan Pathfinder was killed in a single-vehicle crash. According to Sgt. Robert Hungerford of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, as reported by News4Jax, the crash occurred around 1:33 a.m. in the 5800 block of Highway Avenue where the vehicle veered off the road and struck a pine tree before catching fire.
Firefighters with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene, the flames were extinguished, but the driver was pronounced dead on the spot. "The car, disintegrated," Hungerford stated, gesturing towards the remnants of what was once a vehicle, as the speed was likely a contributing factor to the crash. Traffic conditions, he noted, may have been affected by on-and-off rain throughout the previous day, according to First Coast News.
The identity of the driver remains unknown as the intense flames rendered the SUV nearly unrecognizable, impeding immediate identification efforts, Hungerford mentioned in a First Coast News. As for the possibility of other passengers, Hungerford said, "That's a good question, it looks like one. We are still working through that." The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is awaiting results from the Medical Examiner's Office to determine if impairment was a factor in the dreadful incident.
This accident marks the 5th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.
