A man lost his life in Jacksonville's Durkeeville neighborhood on Monday after being shot and crashing his vehicle into a local residence, authorities reported. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office stated that the victim, found in the crashed car on West 8th Street, had at least one gunshot wound and was declared dead after being transported to a nearby hospital. News4JAX highlighted that the shooting appeared to be connected to an earlier dispute close to the crash site, where reports of gunfire were also heard.
Detectives believe the victim's death may be linked to an earlier altercation at a convenience store at the corner of Myrtle and 8th streets, where the shooting reportedly began. While the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is still piecing together the sequence of events, a nearby neighbor recounted hearing the collision. “I heard the crash while I was in the house. My wife came and got me because she thought someone hit our car. I ran outside and saw the car crashed right there. The dude was in the car and saying, ‘Hey, somebody call the police, I‘ve been shot. Please call the police. I’ve been shot,‘” the neighbor said. The unidentified man allegedly involved in the store argument initially attempted to run over the store employee, which led to gunfire, according to witnesses' statements to News4JAX.
In this usually quiet community, the aftermath of the incident left residents grappling with the unexpected disruption. While no other injuries were reported, the impact of the crash also caused extensive damage to the house. As reported by Action News Jax, many neighbors expressed their shock over what is to them an unprecedented event of violence.
Following the incident, investigators detained two adults for questioning, who are said to be cooperating with the police. Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage that captured the altercation, which may shed further light on the events that unraveled. The relationship between the individuals involved remains unclear, according to First Coast News. The police investigation is ongoing, and the sheriff's office is urging anyone with information about the incident to make contact using either their non-emergency number or through Crime Stoppers to provide details anonymously.
