Residents and commuters in the Kalaheo area should expect ongoing disruptions as the Department of Water (DOW) and Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc. (HDCCI) have extended the lane closures on Pu’uwai Road and Po’ohiwi Road until January 31. The closures are part of the Kalaheo Water Systems Improvements Project and are weather-dependent, according to a press release from the County of Kauai.
The work along these roads involves excavation and waterline installation, resulting in varying levels of traffic disruption, from partial lane closures to full road closures. Motorists are advised to follow flaggers' instructions and adhere to posted signs while navigating the area. Partial lane closures will be in place on Pu’uwai Road between the intersection of Po’ohiwi Road and Kikala Road from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on the north end near Pu’ulima Road during the same hours. Intermittent closures will also occur as the project progresses.
A full closure will be in place on a section of Pu’uwai Road, from the intersection with Pu’ulima Road to the road’s end, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As this segment is unpaved and lacks residential or commercial structures, vehicle and pedestrian access, including parking within the work zone, will not be permitted.
For Po’ohiwi Road, which will be limited to local traffic during work hours on weekdays, the Department of Water (DOW) has outlined an access schedule. The road will be closed in one-hour intervals starting at 8 a.m., with 10-minute windows for passage every hour until 3:20 p.m., after which it will remain open until the following business day. This schedule is in place to manage traffic flow and ensure safety, given the narrow nature of the road.
