The pursuit and subsequent death of Marcos Salazar in an officer-involved incident has reached its concluding chapter following the Kane County State's Attorney's office determination. State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser, after reviewing the investigation, stated on December 31 that no criminal wrongdoings were attributable to the Sheriff's Deputy and announced the closure of the case. This closure follows months of detailed scrutiny into the events of that fateful night on March 5, 2024.
According to a report by the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, the incident began when Salazar was spotted speeding by a Kane County Sheriff’s Deputy. After being stationed on the side of Route 64, the Deputy ignited squad car emergency lights, pursuing the vehicle as Salazar continued at perilously high speeds. Eventually, Salazar crashed into a tree, which led to his vehicle catching fire and causing fatal injuries.
The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force and Accident Reconstruction Team jointly embarked on the investigation to provide crucial insights into the tragic events. An autopsy performed by the Kane County Coroner’s Office cited multiple injuries due to the automobile mishap as the cause of death. While a toxicology report was conducted, it didn’t reveal any substances that contributed to the incident.
In a statement obtained by the Kane County State's Attorney’s Office, State's Attorney Mosser expressed her gratitude to the investigating teams for their thorough work, "Thank you to the members of the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team for their diligent and thorough investigation into this incident." "The evidence demonstrates that his actions were appropriate and justified in the circumstances." Mosser further noted that the review process is not only essential for maintaining public trust but also for safeguarding civil rights. "Every case of an officer-involved death must be carefully and thoroughly investigated. This scrutiny maintains the public’s confidence in law enforcement and ensures the protection of the civil rights of those involved," she said.
