Tensions have been high in Keller Independent School District as discussions of a potential district split incited strong reactions from concerned parents and school board members alike. According to a report by CBS News, a lawsuit was filed against the district's board of trustees, alleging an open meetings violation during a session where the issue was discussed. Matthew Mucker, a parent in the district, expressed his concern for transparency and accountability by filing the lawsuit to ensure that future meetings are held publicly, as required by law.
At a recent heated and divisive meeting, it became apparent that the board was fractured on the issue, while the community was overwhelmingly opposed to the idea of splitting the district. Board president Charles Randklev was met with vocal dissent from parents, sometimes even exchanging harsh words with those in attendance. Randklev had to defend himself against accusations, insisting to parent Laney Hawes, "Do you know how absurd that is, to you know, how absurd it was for you to stand up there and propagate that lie?" as documented by NBC DFW.
Furthermore, the district's superintendent, Tracy Johnson, voiced her dissent and prepared to offer her resignation in disagreement with the proposed split, a move that the community strongly discouraged. Johnson's reluctance to be part of the divisive decision-making process underscored the gravity of the situation and the emotional tenor of the school board's proceedings. Discussions were so contentious that even board members called each other out for what was termed as "gaslighting" during the proceedings.
The schedule for the next meeting and the timeline for the vote on the proposal are yet to be announced.
