A Klein ISD student has faced expulsion and criminal charges after being discovered with a firearm on school grounds. The incident, which occurred at Klein Oak High School, unfolded yesterday when a staff member was to promptly act upon receiving information about a student carrying a weapon. Following a swift investigation by school administrators and campus police, the student was detained and a handgun was retrieved from the student's backpack, as reported by FOX 26 Houston.
Klein Oak High School's principal, Thomas Hensley, outlined the circumstances surrounding the event in a letter sent to families, emphasizing that "there is no indication that the student intended to use the weapon to harm anyone, and no threats were made to students, staff, or the school," as noted by FOX 26 Houston. The firearm was registered to the student's parent, who may also face repercussions under federal law. The identities of the student and parent have not been released by district officials.
Meanwhile, ABC13 Eyewitness News reported that the student in question is enduring felony charges in addition to the expulsion, revealing that the 9-millimeter gun was found in the student's possession after a peer reported the situation to authorities.
The school district has adopted a proactive stance, urging all gun owners "to ensure that weapons are stored in a locked and secured location, out of the reach of children and others," as per a report by ABC13. Klein ISD Police Department has reiterated its commitment to promote responsible gun ownership and offers resources to assist families with gun safety, including the provision of complimentary gun locks, which one can obtain by contacting the department at 832-249-4266.
